The Mahudand Lake:
Mahudand Lake is in the Upper Ushu valley of Swat. The distance of the lake is about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Kalam, Swat. It is one of the most famous tourist resort hence it seems like an utmost choice of the holiday-makers from all over Pakistan.
Mahudand literally means the lake of Fish. It is situated in the Hindu-Kush Mountain Range and its elevation is 9,603 feet (2,927 metres) above sea level. The lake expands over the area of two kilometres long piece of land. It takes around three hour to cover a distance of 35 to 40 kilometres, from Kalam to the lake.
The journey starts by road on a four-wheel vehicle, which enters into the the thick forests of the Kalam valley soon. After crossing the jungle, the first stop-over is at Ushu valley. Some green and serene patches of the valley are really fantastic and eye-catching. Gushing water of streams not only gives a spectacular and refreshing eye-view, but also a provides the water source for Power generation for the locals.
On the way to the lake, tourists can see nomads with their herds of sheep/goats who are travelling to deep into the valley. The tourist has to stop and often wait for a while for clearing-up of the road whenever these herds are crossing. It is a routine scenario for the locals; however it could be a pleasant experience especially for the foreign tourists.
The next destination is Mahi Banal after Matiltan, which is another picturesque place on the way to Mahudand lake. There is a popular tourist place, the 22 Mighty waterfalls, after half an hour journey. A small market-place is available in the way to Mahudand lake.
Mahudand lake is a majestic gift of Nature which lies in the foothills of Hindu-Kush Mountain Range and elevated at 9,603 feet (2,927 metres) above sea level. Lush-green meadows, snow-capped mountain peaks and thick forests of the valley surround the lake area. Tall and lofty Pine trees enhance the beauty of the lake manifolds.
There is heavy snowfalling during the winters and consequently the Mahudand lake remains frozen throughout the season. Rather in the summers the surface of the lake becomes almost full of wild flowers like Geum, Blue Poppy, Potentilla and Gentian etc. The Pine trees provide shelter to the hundreds of inhabitant birds. The lake is ideal for the anglers, as it contains tonnes of trout fish reservoirs. Yet fishing is allowed only on the license and the anglers could obtain the license from the relevant authorities.
Tourists can enjoy the beauty of the lake by camping, fishing and trekking to nearby hilly areas. The water of Mahudand lake is flowing through many streams, which contained brown and rainbow trout fish abundantly. Since the excessive and illegal fishing is on its peak therefore the species reduced to the alarming level. The anglers use electrocution, dynamiting and large-netting methods.
In the list of tourist place Mahudand lake must on the priority. It will become the most pleasant and unforgettable experience of the life. Its charming and magnificent landscape makes it a highly recommended lake lake to visit furthermore it is a famous place in Pakistan and the world.
