A suspected serial killer has been apprehended in connection with the infamous Gilgo Beach homicides on Long Island. Previously, authorities disclosed that Rex Heuermann’s spouse and children were away when he purportedly committed at least three murders. Further details have emerged regarding the events following Rex Heuermann’s arrest last week for the Gilgo Beach serial killings.
In an interview with CBS New York, Rodney Harrison, Suffolk County Police Commissioner, revealed the response of the 59-year-old suspect’s family to the allegations that he took the lives of at least three women on Long Island over a decade ago.
“They were astounded, humiliated, and repulsed,” stated Harrison, as reported by the station. “I doubt they were aware of the dual life Heuermann was leading.”
Authorities had previously stated that Heuermann’s wife and children were out of town when he allegedly murdered Megan Waterman, 22, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, and Amber Costello, 27. Their remains were discovered in 2010 in the marsh at Gilgo Beach on Long Island, New York. Heuermann is also a prime suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25.
All four women had worked as online sex workers and had been reported missing between 2007 and 2010, according to previous reports. Subsequently, investigators unearthed the remains of at least ten individuals near Gilgo Beach, although not all are believed to be connected to the same perpetrator.
The architect, who practices in Manhattan and resides in Massapequa Park on Long Island, was apprehended on Thursday and charged on Friday with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney informed PEOPLE that Heuermann was allegedly linked to the killings through cell tower data, a witness’s description of his Chevrolet Avalanche, and ultimately, DNA from five hairs found on three of the victims.
Authorities also discovered that Heuermann utilized an online account to repeatedly view images of his alleged victims and their families. Tierney previously informed PEOPLE that investigators are still examining the locations where the murders took place. As per the district attorney, Heuermann has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court again in early August.
