The Diplomat is an American political thriller series by Debora Cahn. It premiered on Netflix on April 20, 2023.

This eight-part series is (mostly) shot in London of the present day. The story revolves around a female diplomat “Keri Russell” who reluctantly accepts the post of US ambassador to the UK. Immediately after her arrival in England, she pushed into a political hurricane following an attack upon a British battleship that results in the deaths of 41 sailors.

The diplomat faces various challenges in her job, including navigation complicated in international relations. She has to deal with personal and professional issues, balancing her work and family life. Keri Russell’s character is well-written and she delivers an outstanding performance.

The producer dealt with differences of American and English culture in humourously manner. The strengths and weaknesses of US and English foreign policy and how its impacts by petty politics are covered nicely.

The plot is rich, carefully inter-woven details with twists and surprises. Sometimes the story becomes dry and frustrating but we can’t walk out because of main character who deals with all her irritations as a government pawn.

Outstanding acting by Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell and David Gyasi. The brought their characters near to real life with witty and rich dialogue delivery. The supporting cast is equally compelling with amazing performances. Rory Kinnear played the deranged PM Trowbridge is a real treat.

The Diplomat also remains impressive in production, with stunning cinematography, evocative score and meticulous attention. The team successfully focused on all the necessary details of depiction of the world of diplomacy.

The end is a massive cliffhanger as there has to be more to come. If you like geopolitical games, international espionage and witty dialogues then this is your cake. Eat it, I mean watch it.
