Jubilee – A Well Woven Period Drama – Series Review

Web Series: Jubilee

Directed by: Vikramaditya Motwane

Genre: Period Drama

Cast: Aparshakti Khurana, Sidhant Gupta, Wamiqa Gambi, Aditi Rao Hydari, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Ram Kapoor

My Rating: 8/10

Jubilee is a series about cinema and movies. The rise of cinema, the rise of super stars, the competition then, the inner politics of industry, gossips and all the inner story of the circles of Indian cinema.

It’s a period-piece based on Bombay hindi talkies era of pre and post independence, also loosely inspired from lives of Devika Rani, Himanshu Rai, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar etc.

Jubilee takes us back to the golden age of Hindi cinema, where the talkies culture ruled the silver screen in the 1940s. The Series tells the story of a man, determined to become the country’s next superstar. But his relentless pursuit came with unexpected and disastrous consequences.

The series is just mesmerising. The way every sequence is shot and top it up with excellent music from Amit Trivedi. Every scene is a piece of art and the artists excel in every scene.

Hats off to Vikramaditya Motwane – the direction is screamingly super! Every scene, every nuance, the lighting, the pauses, the telephone ringing – it all contributes to a splendid scene.

Actors to watch in Jubilee – Sidhant Gupta playing Jay Khanna, Wamiqa Gabbi playing Nilofer and Aparshakti Khurana playing Madan Kumar.Sidhant Gupta was a total package. A visual treat along with flawless acting. His passion, his sincerity is visible in his character. Wamiqa Gabbi played a strong headed woman who knows what she wants in life and is unapologetic about it. Even if you would like to not like the character, you will ultimately start appreciating her strong headedness and her guts to live life and aspire what she wants. All artists have done their proper homework. They took no shortcuts. Credit goes to the director to really put his heart in this timeless masterpiece.

If you are from that era it will take you back and if you are from the current crop, the aura and character of that era will mesmerise you. Jubilee is a must watch.
