Highly Respected and Beloved’ Tennessee Surgeon Allegedly Fatally Shot By Patient Inside an Examination Room.

An orthopedic surgeon was reportedly shot and killed by a patient within an examination room on Tuesday, prompting a frantic manhunt for the perpetrator and leaving the clinic’s staff in a state of distress.

The Collierville Police Department has stated that Larry Pickens, a 29-year-old individual, has been charged with the murder of Dr. Benjamin Mauck on Tuesday. The suspect was apprehended just five minutes later, following the examination room incident, as captured by video footage from another patient, near the entrance of the Campbell Clinic Orthopedics office in Collierville, Tennessee.

In a statement released on Wednesday morning, the police announced the arrest of Pickens, charging him with first-degree murder and aggravated assault. According to the authorities, there were no previous reports regarding Pickens, and his bond has been set at $1.2 million by Collierville Municipal Judge Lee Ann Pafford Dobson.

During a news conference on Tuesday, Police Chief Dale Lane mentioned that Pickens was “in possession of a firearm” when confronted by the police outside the clinic and was “apprehended without incident.”

There were no other individuals harmed, as confirmed by Chief Lane.

“This incident appears to involve a personal altercation,” stated the police chief.

Chief Lane also revealed that Pickens had spent “several hours” at the clinic prior to the shooting and that the attack seems to have been premeditated. “It is a grave, horrific, and dreadful incident,” he added.

Dr. Mauck had been a member of the Campbell Clinic since 2012, having graduated from the University of Tennessee-Memphis’ medical school in 2006. He specialized in performing surgeries on the elbow, hand, and wrist, and earned immense admiration from both his patients and colleagues. Following his untimely demise, numerous individuals associated with him expressed their condolences and shared heartfelt messages on social media.

Less than a week ago, Mauck was featured in Memphis Magazine as one of its “preeminent physicians.” According to Fox 13 News, he mentioned that he aspired to become a doctor since his teenage years while growing up in Savannah, Tennessee.

Fox 13 obtained a statement from Campbell Clinic, which described Mauck as a “deeply respected and cherished” surgeon within the community. The clinic announced the closure of all its facilities on Wednesday to allow employees to mourn his loss.

“We are deeply saddened and devastated to confirm that this incident has resulted in the tragic loss of one of our esteemed and beloved medical practitioners, Dr. Ben Mauck,” the clinic expressed. “During this difficult time, we kindly request your thoughts and prayers for his family.”
