Charges Against Alec Baldwin Dropped In ‘Rust’ Shooting

Prosecutors in the state of New Mexico made a public declaration on Thursday, revealing their resolution to dismiss the charges of involuntary manslaughter leveled against thespian Alec Baldwin in relation to the unfortunate demise of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the production of the Western cinematic creation titled “Rust” in the year 2021.

A well-informed insider acquainted with the ongoing inquiry disclosed that the choice to abandon the allegations of involuntary manslaughter against Alec Baldwin was made consequent to the emergence of novel evidence concerning the firearm he was employing—a firearm that discharged the fatal projectile causing the untimely passing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the filming of “Rust” in 2021.

Nevertheless, state-appointed legal representatives verified that the custodian of the film’s weaponry, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who also faced charges of involuntary manslaughter linked to the incident, would persist in undergoing prosecution as originally scheduled.

“The revelation of newfound facts necessitates further investigative and forensic scrutiny,” enunciated special legal representatives Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis. “Hence, we shall be withdrawing the charges of involuntary manslaughter lodged against Mr. Baldwin.”

Yet, they appended, “This determination does not absolve Mr. Baldwin from legal culpability, and charges may potentially be reinitiated.”

Concurrently, on the very day when the actor Alec Baldwin and fellow members of the cast recommenced their involvement in the movie’s production within Montana, an unforeseen turn of events unfolded concerning the year-and-a-half-old case, as the accusations against him were rescinded. The first to disseminate this news was Baldwin’s legal team, composed of Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, and later, this declaration was corroborated by the prosecutors.

In an Instagram post that appeared on Thursday, Baldwin uploaded an image portraying himself alongside his spouse, Hilaria Baldwin, and conveyed gratitude to her and his attorney Luke, articulating, “I owe the entirety of my current standing to this remarkable woman (and to you, Luke).”

The actor Alec Baldwin, aged 65, and the custodian of the film’s weaponry, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, aged 25, were both arraigned on two counts of involuntary manslaughter back in January. These charges emanated from the unfortunate incident that transpired on October 21, 2021, during the production of a cinematic work situated outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was on this day that Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life, and director Joel Souza sustained injuries, as a result of a discharge from a Colt .45 revolver, which Baldwin had been rehearsing with.

Issuing an official statement on Thursday, legal representatives for Gutierrez-Reed, namely Jason Bowles and Todd Bullion, expressed, “Upon the culmination of this legal process, we are wholly confident that Hannah will also be exonerated.”

Initially, Alec Baldwin had been accused of exhibiting a “reckless” disregard for safety in connection to the demise of Halyna Hutchins. Prosecutors contended that visual evidence portrayed Baldwin with his finger placed upon the trigger of the revolver mere minutes prior to the discharge of the lethal projectile that claimed Hutchins’ life. In contrast, Baldwin asserted that he had been apprised of the firearm’s “cold” status and, consequently, did not manipulate the trigger.

Investigators have encountered challenges in elucidating how live rounds made their way onto the movie set. However, recent perusal of evidence led to the revelation that the lengthy Colt .45 “Peacemaker” revolver which Baldwin had been employing had undergone alterations subsequent to its initial manufacturing by Italian firearm manufacturer Pietta, as revealed by a source familiar with the case. This discovery serves to undermine the assertion that the firearm was in full working order and could solely have discharged had Baldwin pulled the trigger.

The state’s prosecuting body has encountered legal obstacles, inclusive of the stepping down of two prosecutors, and the dismissal of the most severe charge against the defendants back in February. Additionally, the first assistant director, Dave Halls, was met with a suspended sentence the previous month after pleading guilty to the charge of negligently wielding a lethal weapon. Prosecutors had ascribed to him the responsibility for set safety.
