Body of Missing Woman Discovered from Boyfriend’s Residence

In an unfortunate turn of events, Brittany Battaglia, a resident of Chicago, Illinois, who went missing on June 2, was tragically found deceased in her boyfriend’s apartment. Authorities revealed that her body, which was located inside a duffle bag, had suffered severe injuries, nearly resulting in decapitation.

The Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney, Mike Pekara, provided details during a press conference, as reported by NBC Chicago. He stated that the 33-year-old Brittany Battaglia had been subjected to multiple stab wounds of great force, leading to her head being almost detached from her body.

Genesis Silva, the boyfriend of over a year and a convicted felon, who is also a registered sex offender, has been taken into custody in connection with her demise. WGN9 reports that Silva faces charges of concealing a homicide and obstructing a police officer. While he has not yet been charged with murder, the possibility of additional charges has not been ruled out, according to the police, as mentioned by NBC Chicago.

During the press conference, Pekara shared that on June 2, Battaglia informed her roommate that she intended to visit her boyfriend’s apartment in the nearby Logan Square area before attending a party. However, when Battaglia failed to return home, her concerned roommate tried to contact Battaglia’s brother, but was unsuccessful in reaching him, as per WGN9.

Subsequently, Battaglia’s brother discovered that she never made it to the party. On Sunday, both her brother and roommate reported her missing. Later that same day, police executed a search warrant at Silva’s apartment, where they allegedly discovered two machetes, as stated by Pakera. Furthermore, during the search, the large duffle bag in the bedroom was examined, leading to the discovery of Battaglia’s lifeless body.

Pekara added that the medical examiner’s office concluded that the victim’s cause of death was the result of multiple sharp force wounds, and her head was almost severed from her body. CBS Chicago reports that investigators also found a tarp, garbage bags, cleaning supplies, and a note with the words, “Can you ask average time until smell.”

During a routine traffic stop, Silva was searched by the police, who allegedly found an ice pick and two pocket knives in his possession, as per ABC7. Detectives accompanied Silva back to his apartment, instructing him to remain outside as it was considered a suspected crime scene. However, when he attempted to enter the apartment via a back stairway, police took him into custody, according to the outlet.

Quamieshia Greathouse, Battaglia’s roommate, shared with ABC7 that on Friday night, Battaglia had mentioned she was going to Silva’s apartment to prepare dinner for him. Greathouse grew increasingly concerned when she did not hear from Battaglia, especially since she had plans to leave town. She stated, “I specifically waited to see if she would come home and pack for her trip because that’s something she definitely wouldn’t miss. And when I realized she was not going to make it in time for that flight, I knew immediately that something was horribly wrong. I’ve definitely warned her about this person, but Brittany’s nature is to see the good in everybody.”

According to CBS Chicago, Silva previously pleaded guilty to criminal sexual abuse in a 2009 case and received a sentence of two years of probation. In relation to Battaglia’s death, he has been ordered to be held without bail. Silva is expected to appear in court on June 20, but it remains unclear whether he has retained legal representation to speak on his behalf.
